๐ง Timbre Matching Test: Hear the Material, Not the Note
A reference sound plays, then three more in a row, and exactly one of the three is built from the same balance of overtones. Every sound sits at a different pitch on purpose, so following the note leads nowhere โ the answer lives only in the texture. Loudness is levelled to equal perceived volume and then jittered, so the brightest sound is not the answer either. Across twelve trials the three candidates close in on each other, measuring the timbre constancy that lets you recognise an instrument whatever note it plays.
๐ก How to play โ You hear a reference sound, then three more one after another. Exactly one of the three is made of the same material as the reference โ the same balance of overtones โ and that is the one to pick. Every sound sits at a different pitch on purpose, so listening for the note will not help; only the texture carries the answer. Loudness is levelled and jittered as well, so the brightest sound is not the answer either. Twelve trials, and the three candidates grow closer in texture as you go. A correct pick is worth 100 points and a wrong one costs 50, so guessing averages out to nothing. Maximum 1200 points.
